The causes of diabetes are not fully known yet. Medical science is still uncertain of the reasons why the condition affects an individual. However, there are certain factors that was said to be associated with the disease.
Type 1 Diabetes – this diabetes condition is considered as an autoimmune disease. This means the body’s immune system acts against the pancreatic cells, thus hampering insulin production. The susceptibility of developing type 1 diabetes occurs within the family. Aside from that, there are certain viral infections that was said to cause the condition as well.
Type 2 Diabetes
- Hereditary Factor: it was said that there is a strong link between genetic factors and type 2 diabetes. That means the condition may run in the family. Individuals with a family history of diabetes are 25% at risk of developing this condition.
- Dietary Factor: it was also said that modern eating habits play a huge role in the development of type 2 diabetes. Excessive consumption of foods high in refined carbohydrates may result to the development of the condition. These foods include biscuits, bread, candies and cakes.
- Excessive Weight: compared to the body’s muscle cells, the fat cells contain lesser insulin receptors. Aside from that, fat cells contain fatty acids that may slowdown the metabolism of glucose, which may lead to a condition known as hyperglycemia or an abnormal high blood sugar level that results to diabetes.
- Sedentary Lifestyle: development of type 2 diabetes may have something to do with people’s modern lifestyle. Sedentary lifestyle means less physical work and more hours of sitting. Even after work, doing leisure activities is also considered sedentary. Research has shown that the development of type 2 diabetes is higher on inactive individuals.
- Stress Factor: stress can greatly affect the body’s metabolism and this may cause a drastic change on the levels of blood sugar, thus resulting to the development of the condition.
